Donating to the Kolfe Christmas Meal....

We made some changes today...
Our friends at Gladney
would like to provide
(as they have done in the past)
a meal for the boys at Kolfe.
What they don't have
is the funds to do this.
That's where we all come in...
They will handle the purchasing of the food,
and have staff there on
Ethiopian Christmas (January 7th)
to ensure that
this all runs smoothly.
We had gotten the promise of sheep from a organization in Addis, but turning this over to Gladney, the boys will likely be eating Ox instead.  Which they prefer. :o)
I will be turning all of our donations
over to them on Friday.
(After giving donors the chance to change their donations,
and get a tax credit from Gladney instead.  If you have
already donated, I will be contacting you.)
Gladney is expecting their costs
to run at $1,200.
(That's more than we had estimated,
but I have told them we will do
all we can to help them get this done.)

If you would like to make
a tax-deductible donation
 to the
Kolfe Ethiopian Christmas Meal,
please follow these steps...
(It's easy, I promise!)

Cheerful giving... is so much fun!

Alrighty... I am not going to update the total here, until the money has actually been donated. (sometimes people forget) That being said, I am getting really excited about the verbals that are coming in... Yea God!!!!  Hearts are being moved, and the boys will be blessed!!  So exciting!!!

Luke 6:38 (NIV)

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Pretty sure that DOES NOT mean that giving money to this project, or any other, will mean you get money back as a blessing... but I am sure that God loves a cheerful giver, and blesses with joy when we act out on His heart for those in need.  God has so blessed us, and it sure is fun to share that with others!!!  Thank you so much!!!

Christmas Dinner for Kolfe

This is the standard, day in,
day out meal for the boys of Kolfe.
This is what you are served
at a restaurant in Ethiopia.
Notice a difference?
So do I.
Growing boys, who don't get a lot of nutrients.
But, I am pretty sure we can change that...
for one meal this holiday season.
We are teaming up with some friends to provide
a meal for the boys during this season of Christ.
 - - - - - -
This is what I want this year for Christmas.
I don't want THINGS to sit on a shelf,
or hang in my closet...
I want FOOD... for them.
Are you blessed to be a blessing to
these precious children this season?
Want to get involved?
Message me, and bless them.

Only God...

Three times today alone, I have been asked to share the story of how my love for these boys began.  Here goes my attempt to make a long story short...  no grading please, I know already I won't pass!

November of 2009, God began to stir my heart towards adoption.  I thought at the time it was towards paper adoption into our home. (who knows what the future will hold)  When I finally worked up the courage to tell my husband, he laughed.  We had just downsized, where was I going to put these kids?? (By the way, I don't believe the size of your home should factor in... these boys live in rough conditions.) Months went by, but the feeling didn't.  God was speaking... nudging... there was more he had for me than my current life.

In January of 2010, a friend at the time shared a video of a woman who had been to Kolfe.  This woman had begun a "family"/email relationship with a boy from the orphanage.  Hearing her story about what this relationship had done for him, and for her... I cried.  I knew this was what God had been telling me to do.  John and the kids watched the video and knew too.  It was a foot in the door towards adoption.  A chance to be a part of a young man's life who otherwise would never have a family, due to his age.

From January to March, we waited, and prayed, it was agonizing.  We had asked to be matched with a boy, and were waiting on pins and needles for his name and an email...  Already, God had placed this boy "our son" in our hearts, and we were anxious to begin to get to know him.  We knew there was a name, a face, a story waiting for us.   I can't begin to imagine what true adoptive families go through during the wait, because this was on my thoughts day and night.  I checked my email constantly, and the kids would pray at lunch/dinner each day, "God please keep our brother safe...  Show our brother your love..."  We just needed that name!

Our two sons on the right and left.  Emnatu John and Ayal John.
Three months later, I got a call from a third woman, who's "son" had two friends who had asked for moms.  I was asked a very simple question that day, 19 months ago... "Do you want the kid studying to be the baker, or the kid studying to be the auto mechanic?" I had no idea how to choose... but God did.   John and Kyle are car guys... so I went with the auto mechanic.

A few days later, we wrote our first email.  We weren't sure what to say, so we told him our names, what the kids were interested in, and this, "We are a family that loves Jesus, and has lots of love to share. We would love to share that love with you, Emantus!"  I smile now to read his name... his friend had misspelled it. :o)

Two days later, there was this.  He had me with the first two words.
"Hi mom    First of all thanks God who meets us. My name is emnatu .I was born in Addis .April 2 1991. (a fact made up for us, he didn't know any part of that date) I have one brother. (Now our oldest son, Ayal) My father and mom died when I was two years .The cause of my father death is war because my father was soldier .I remember my mom was so sick .she was attend hospital .BUT I don’t know the disease ,because I was child I interred to kolfe at that moment .not a lot but I am happy by kolfe life .The thing that I am happy is after mom and dad gone .I am trying to change my self .the sorrow (sad) thing is I do not know family love and also mom and dad love. But now thanks to God .I hope I am gone get family love through you"

And so, without knowing what God had in the works, we began to email him regularly.  Unbeknownst to us, he had begun walking the long distance to his school, so that he could use his transportation money to check his email account.  (I just found this out.) He was emailing every 1-2 days, and email became our lifeline to the son, not the kid in an email, that God had given us.
This was the very first photo we recieved.
The first photos he sent us set me back.  He didn't look like I had envisioned.  He was older than I had thought, his hair was very long, and in the first photo, there was no smile at all... but God was working on both of us.  (E. had wrapped himself around our hearts within the first week!)  His friends told me months later that they always loved Emnatu, but the changes having a family brought were really noticeable.  His heart was healing, and his smile...  well, that was now evident ear to ear!

Just one month later.  A photo taken by a friend.  By the way, I won't tell him, because culturally it is better for him to have short hair, but a part of me now misses the long 'fro.  It's what I will always remember about him from those first 2 months. :o)

He asked within the first month if I had been to another country besides America.  In my heart, I knew the real question he was asking.  Would I come to Ethiopia?  I broke his heart, when I told him no, I would not come.  That was March... by the end of May, my answer was... "Pray, I will try to raise the money to come."  but it was beginning to look like I was going to lose my travel buddy, because her trip wasn't coming together as she hoped.

My husband's response was, "You can't go alone. You have to at least travel with someone."  And so God moved in my heart, again...  I had to go... He was calling me to Ethiopia, of all places.  Names, faces, stories, laughter, and love... all rolled into one package... were waiting for me in AFRICA!!

Hugging our precious son face to face for the first time.
He was hugging so tight, I couldn't stay on my feet. ♥
I can't look at this photo without crying... oh, what JOY!!!

Most of you know the rest of the story.  A God-ordained video posted on facebook showing Korah, where my sponsor girl in Ethiopia lived.  An open wall of the owner of that video, where I read that she was traveling to ET 9 days later... and a leap of faith, involving this complete stranger from another state that I would travel with, and eventually call my friend.  I still remember her message to me when I basically asked (in the first message) if I could go with her...  she said, "Oh gosh let's talk."

"Wow today I meet with her in kolfe and when I saw her in front of us, I was can't believe. we were had a great day. She is so sweet and lovely mom. She have place in my heart and love her so much!!!!!!"  His fb post that evening.

God had given me a travel partner, and made a way for me to spend 9 days away from home, and 7 days in country, literally all day long, every day of my trip, (I didn't leave the orphanage, even to eat or go to the bathroom... again, only God could do that.) with a group of boys who will forever be in my heart.

My first trip, I had NO plans other than them.  We sat for 10-11 hours a day talking, laughing..
just enjoying the time God had given us.

Along the way, our "family" would grow from 1 son, to 2, to 3, and now back to 2 young men.  One trip, would turn into 2, and then 3, with my entire family being together in Ethiopia for 11 wonderful days, before a year had gone by.  This God given passion would grow and grow... and with it, my heart would swell with love for these boys and their culture.

It has been a crazy ride, but one I wouldn't change for anything!!  We are blessed to be a blessing, and we want to live our lives to make a difference...  Never underestimate what a Holy God can do when you ask Him to open your eyes and your heart, and you tell Him you are willing...  The thing that saddens me the most is to watch people sit on the sidelines cheering me on, acting like we are doing something they can't... shouldn't.  This is not about us...  really, it's not about you either...  jump, leap, run full on... to our Savior's arms.  Ask him where He would use YOU...  He may not call you to another country, but make no doubt about this... He WILL CALL YOU, in a way that
 ONLY GOD can!

Where do you stand?

Hebrews 13:5
Keep your lives free from the love of money
and be content with what you have,
because God has said,

“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”

 Romans 12:2
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is—
his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Thinking these two verses go together just a bit.
If we are content and free from the love of money,
we won't fit in with this world.
We will also have more of HIS money freed up to
help those who TRULY need it.

Feeling a bit awkward here,
and happy like my friend here
 because of it!

Where do you stand?
Need to do some praying?

Nothing new...

For those of you who are regular followers to our blog, and check back every so often to see if there is something new...  I am exhausted mentally and physically, too much on my plate here, and too many heartaches with things over there...  I am taking a much needed break this week, so there will be no new posts for a bit.

In the meantime, a funny but true depiction of what often times is our worship...

Lovin' on as many as we can...

This last trip was a special one for me.
Obviously, being able to have my
family all under one roof,
on one Continent was huge,
but the great part about bringing
3 extra family members
is that you can bring
300 extra pounds of luggage.
That meant that THESE
(click for the story)
great jerseys donated by
JCPENNY
finally made it into our bags.
Soccer is HUGE for these boys,
so they flip at the idea of
a soccer shirt!
(The other kiddos are wearing
their "new" clothing too!
We filled our suitcases with as
much as we could.)
Happy boys!
I loved seeing them wearing their
new clothes all week.
That's when you know they were a hit...
when they get worn
DAY after DAY, after DAY!
These were 15 of the newest boys,
showing off their new shirts,
and pants/shorts.
Their needs were a tad greater,
because they had missed
the once a year govt hand out
of 1 outfit for the year.
The older boys asked us to buy
the 15 new tennis shoes for school.
Same as last trip,
each boy got shoes, socks and undies.
Leaving Ethiopia, you can only carry
200 birr of their money with you.
(less than $12)
On her way out, our sweet friend Linda,
handed us her leftover birr.
What a blessing!
The next day after lunch,
we stopped by a "shop"
on the side of the road.
We handed a group of our boys
a handful of Linda's cash
with some extra...
and told them to go nuts
buying flip flops for the boys.
The chaos that ensued reminded me of
pillow day a few days before.
Armload after armload, the
boys brought back shoes to the van.
Those of us still in the van
rushed to find the "matches"
and bind them together
 with green bands
I had planned to hand out that day,
before the next load arrived.
The end result was over 70 pair.
Sadly, not enough for everyone,
but it made a small dent.
Yordanos, our driver, reminded us that
we were helping not only the boys,
but the merchants.
In particular, a crippled woman,
who, unable to stand upright,
moves around on all fours.
The purchase of 40 or more pairs of shoes
from her alone, was a huge blessing.
THAT is why buying in country
 is so important!!!
Showing off their new shoes...
We started with those same 15
who were new to Kolfe,
and then got as far as we could with
the other boys.
These shoes will be a top priority again
next trip.  Cheap to replace... they
cost less than $1.50 in country.

Prayer works!

It has been a prayer of our family's
for months and months now
that the older boys of Kolfe
would be able to continue
with their education...
So many of you joined us in these prayers.
A few of you also donated to our
Kolfe Pillow Project,
and as a result,
the excess went to the schooling costs.

This morning we got confirmation that
God had nudged a heart to help underwrite that fund.
Scholarships are back in full swing for this year.
Thank you Jesus for once again
 providing for these boys....

Ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.

Into HIS arms...

‎19 months ago, I was asked a very simple question... "Do you want the kid studying to be the baker, or the kid studying to be the auto mechanic?" I had no idea how to choose... but God did. John and Kyle are car guys... so I went with the auto mechanic. I later learned his name was Emnatu.

We didn't have a clue what we were doing... but we knew God had commanded us in his word to care for the orphans, so this was a small start. We were willing, and HE chose to use us.

My life will never be the same, and I wouldn't have it any other way!!! There is so much joy in being used for HIS GLORY, HIS PURPOSES.

♥♥ What's HE calling you to do? ♥♥ Take a running leap... HE will catch you! ♥♥

A challenge... to give it all you've got!

What is God calling YOU to do?  I had a conversation with one of our sons tonight.  He asked me to do something for 4 specific boys who have touched his heart.  I am praying about it, and trying to remind myself that this is not my job, but God's...  I just need to be willing to be used by Him.

Are you willing?  God's word is pretty clear that we need to be doing SOMETHING to help the widows, the orphans, the least of these...  they are all around us.  AND YET... so often we get caught fighting for the "American Dream"...  focusing on our own tiny little worlds.

I am asking you this week... think about where your treasures are... are your priorities in the right place?  At your funeral, what will they say about you?  That your nails were perfect, your house was neat and tidy... or something more?  Will people be able to say, "He made an impact on my life."  "She was sold out for Jesus, and HE shined through all they did."

I'm still a work in progress, but I am aiming to make an impact on people who have lives that aren't as easy as mine truly is.  I don't want to just be blessed... I want to be blessed to be a blessing, and live my life to make a difference.

How about you?

Overflowing with blessings...

Garage sale day!
I am always amazed at how
much we have to sell on
our sale days.
So many people, all giving
a little, leads to a BIG blessing!
Thank you!!!!
Total's total was $521!
Praise God!!!
We could not have done it without
the help of these ladies.
~ A former g.sale customer, who is now
a sweet, sweet friend.
~ A new friend (of 5 weeks) from our small group,
who has a huge heart from serving.
~ A friend (and her beautiful daughters) who's heart
for adoption and orphans, brings me to tears... often.

These ladies gave so sacrificially of their
time both Friday during set up,
and Saturday during the sale.
Hours, and hours of selfless work,
to abundantly bless our family.
Special thanks to my family.
my hubby, the Ks for their tireless work
on Friday and Saturday,
and my parents for helping out on Saturday.
My daughter read a C'slist add
that I had placed that said
"Multi-family sale"...
she misunderstood the multi-family
part, and (so sweet) said,
"but WE aren't going this time,
just YOU."  I appreciate their help,
they would love to go with me,
and I know it will be tough to see me
travel without them.
 - - -
We have a long way to go,
before the next journey to ET is
paid for, but today,
God, and so many of you,
helped us make great progress!
Next sale will likely be in late Nov/early Dec.

Melkam Meskel...

Tomorrow in my other home its Meskel, a Holy Day.
Meskel means
"The finding of the True Cross"
Meskel is celebrated by dancing, feasting
and lighting a massive bonfire
known in Ethiopian tradition as "Damera".
I posted that first photo on fb this morning,
and one of the boys commented that their
dameras are bigger at Kolfe.
That reminded me of these photos
from last year.
Boys and fire... not sure they need the excuse
of a Holy Day, but it doesn't hurt.
There is no school today,
no work, just celebrations.
The bonfire is ready and waiting to be lit
at Kolfe in the next few hours...
oh, how I wish I could be there to see it.
Melkam Meskel boys!
